Lumgailu Panmei: Researching Climate Resilience and Himalayan Forestry

Lumgailu Panmei is a dedicated emerging environmental scientist and researcher currently pursuing her Ph.D. as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in the Department of Forestry and Biodiversity at Tripura University.² Her academic focus is highly relevant to the ecological challenges facing Northeast India, centering on natural resource management (NRM), socio-ecology, food security, and climate resilience.³

Academic Contributions and Publications Panmei’s research is crucial for developing sustainable, localized solutions to climate change in vulnerable mountainous regions. She focuses heavily on the utilization of native flora, particularly bamboo, to stabilize and restore fragile landscapes.

Her published academic work reflects this commitment. She co-authored a significant chapter titled "Ecosystem-Based Adaptation with Bamboo-Based Livelihood Diversification: A Case Study in India's Eastern Himalayas," which was published in the 2024 Springer book Climate Crisis, Social Responses and Sustainability.⁴ In this work, she explores how indigenous bamboo species can be utilized not only to prevent soil erosion and restore degraded ecosystems but also to provide sustainable, alternative livelihoods for local mountain communities. Furthermore, she has contributed to research papers such as "Ecological restoration of fragile Eastern Himalayan landscapes through bamboo bioengineering," solidifying her footprint in the field of environmental conservation.⁵
