Dr. Alana Golmei

Dr. Alana Golmei is a distinguished Indian lawyer, humanitarian, and social activist who has dedicated her career to fighting racial discrimination, gender-based violence, and human rights violations. Born in the Tamenglong district of Manipur, India, she belongs to the Naga ethnic community.¹ Her early life in the diverse and culturally rich Northeast region shaped her profound understanding of the unique socio-cultural identities of its people, as well as the systemic challenges they face when migrating to mainland India for education and employment.

Moving to the National Capital Region (NCR), Golmei observed the pervasive racism, marginalization, and physical violence frequently directed at individuals from Northeast India. Recognizing the lack of institutional support for these vulnerable groups, she became a driving force for systemic change. In 2007, Golmei co-founded the North East Support Centre & Helpline (NESCH) in New Delhi.² The helpline was established to prevent harassment and abuse meted out to women, people from the Northeast, and tribal communities in Delhi and the NCR.³ Under her leadership as General Secretary, NESCH has evolved into a vital lifeline, offering emergency response, legal awareness training, and counseling for victims of racial slurs, workplace exploitation, and sexual harassment.

Golmei’s legal expertise has been crucial in bridging the gap between marginalized victims and the Indian justice system. She regularly organizes legal awareness programs to educate Northeastern workers and students about their rights regarding wages, cybercrime, and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act.⁴ Her activism extends beyond grassroots support to high-level policy advocacy. In 2014, she was appointed as a member of the Bezbaruah Committee, a panel established by the Ministry of Home Affairs to recommend actionable measures to address and prevent racial discrimination targeted at Northeastern Indians.⁵ Her insights helped shape recommendations for stricter law enforcement, curriculum changes, and social integration strategies.

Beyond NESCH, Dr. Golmei's humanitarian spirit is reflected in her founding of the Pann Nu Foundation and her role as a founding member of the Burma Center Delhi.⁶ The Pann Nu Foundation is committed to safeguarding the dignity of women and striving against all forms of discrimination and crimes against them, transcending barriers of caste, class, race, religion, and geography.⁷

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Golmei's advocacy became more critical than ever. People from the Northeast experienced a severe surge in xenophobia, racial profiling, and targeted harassment. Golmei and NESCH actively documented and fought against numerous disturbing incidents where Northeastern individuals were spat on, illegally evicted by landlords, and subjected to derogatory racial slurs such as "corona."⁸ By bringing these human rights violations to the attention of the media and law enforcement, she ensured that the victims were not silenced and that perpetrators faced legal consequences. Furthermore, she consistently challenges the normalization of everyday racism, publicly condemning the use of offensive labels like "chinky," "momo," or "chowmein" that are frequently used to demean Northeasterners.

In recognition of her relentless pursuit of justice and her unwavering support for women and marginalized communities, Dr. Alana Golmei was honored with the Delhi Commission for Women's (DCW) Achievement Award in 2016.⁹ Today, she continues to be a prominent voice in Indian civil society, using her legal acumen and compassionate leadership to transform the landscape of human rights in the country. Her journey from Tamenglong to the forefront of national activism stands as a testament to her resilience and her profound commitment to equality.

Kasangaipow Gonmei - Sub Inspector

Kasangaipow Gonmei is a highly decorated Sub-Inspector in the Unarmed Branch (UB) of the Assam Police, whose life story exemplifies profound resilience and professional dedication. Born to the late Pana Gonmei, he was raised in Naga Colony in Silchar, Assam. He completed his early education at Holy Cross School in Silchar, establishing deep roots in the Barak Valley that continue to influence his community advocacy.¹

His formative years were abruptly interrupted by tragedy when his father passed away while Gonmei was sitting for his college examinations. This sudden loss plunged his family into severe financial hardship. However, Gonmei found both refuge and strict discipline in sports. Training extensively at the Silchar Football Academy, he developed his athletic talents and ultimately represented his region as a national-level footballer. He has publicly credited the support of the academy and the inherent rigors of football for equipping him with the mental fortitude necessary to navigate his family's financial crisis.²

This athletic background proved instrumental in shaping his professional trajectory. In 2008, his achievements on the football field facilitated his official recruitment into the Assam Police under the sports quota. Over the course of his career, Gonmei has built a distinguished reputation for his commitment to law enforcement. He is currently stationed at Ulubari, Guwahati, where he serves within the CID Organisation of Assam as the Confidential Assistant to the Inspector General of Police (Law & Order).³

His unwavering service has been repeatedly recognized at the highest administrative levels of the state police. On December 31, 2025, it was officially announced that Gonmei had been awarded his second Director General of Police (DGP) Silver Medal for meritorious service for the year 2025. As a twice-decorated officer, he remains a deeply proud representative of the Naga community, Silchar, and the wider Barak Valley. By openly sharing his trajectory from a grieving, financially struggling student to a respected police official, he hopes to serve as an enduring inspiration for young people striving to achieve their own ambitions.⁴

Manipur: CoTU Condemns Abduction of 71-Year-Old Man in Sadar Hills Amid Rising Tensions

The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has strongly condemned the alleged abduction of 71-year-old Hemjang Haokip from Khunkho Kuki Village in the Sadar Hills region of Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. According to statements released by the organization, the elderly man was taken from his village at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon by armed individuals suspected to be cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) and the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF-Kamson) faction.^[1]

The situation rapidly escalated over the weekend as search operations, bolstered by security forces and sniffer dogs, led to the alarming discovery of clothes belonging to the abducted man near his farm.^[2] During the incident, reports indicate that a hut belonging to the elderly farmer was also burnt down by the perpetrators.^[3] In response to these developments, local village bodies have set a 24-hour deadline for his safe release, intensifying pressure on law enforcement and government authorities to trace his whereabouts.^[4]

Violation of Ceasefire Rules and Communal Harmony

CoTU has characterized the targeting of an elderly civilian as a deliberate and serious provocation designed to heighten communal tensions and disrupt the long-standing coexistence between the Kuki and Naga communities in the region.^[5] The committee drew direct links between this abduction and recent political developments in the state, specifically noting the recent suspension of an economic blockade by the United Naga Council (UNC).^[6]

A primary concern raised by CoTU is the brazen nature of the crime. The organization publicly questioned how armed cadres belonging to groups currently bound by official ceasefire agreements could allegedly operate openly with firearms in broad daylight.^[7] CoTU stressed that if the involvement of these factions is confirmed, it raises critical questions about compliance with established ceasefire ground rules and highlights a severe deterioration of the security apparatus in the Kangpokpi district.^[8]

Demands for State and Civil Intervention

Describing the abduction as an act engineered by vested interests to sow division, CoTU has launched an urgent appeal to civil society organizations, church leaders, and community elders across all communities to intervene on strict humanitarian grounds and facilitate Haokip’s immediate and safe release.^[9]

Furthermore, the committee has directed its demands to the highest levels of the state apparatus. CoTU urged Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the State Security Advisor, and local law enforcement agencies to register a formal case, launch an immediate, comprehensive rescue operation, and initiate stringent legal action against those responsible for the abduction and arson.^[10] While the specific identities and factional affiliations of the abductors remain subject to official verification, the incident has severely underscored the fragile nature of peace in peripheral tribal areas.

41st Women’s Day of Prayer Observed by Rongmei Baptist Churches Council (RBCC): Celebrating Faith, Dignity, and Leadership

On September 27, 2026, the 41st Women's Day of Prayer of the Rongmei Baptist Churches Council (RBCC) was joyously observed across churches in the Noney district of Manipur, as well as by Rongmei Baptist congregations throughout India^[1]. This year’s profound theme, "Let your light so shine before men," aimed to emphasize the spiritual and societal responsibilities of women as beacons of faith and moral guidance^[2].

The day's events were deeply rooted in acknowledging the indispensable role of women in shaping families, strengthening churches, and nurturing entire communities^[3]. During the special services, men, youth, and children took the opportunity to express their profound respect and gratitude for the sacrifices and contributions made by women toward the well-being of the community^[4].

Gospel Messages and Pan-India Observance

Throughout the day, various church leaders and speakers delivered moving Gospel messages that highlighted the importance of God-fearing women acting as positive role models in contemporary society^[5]. The speakers encouraged the women in attendance to continue playing meaningful and dynamic roles to foster peace and stability within their families and congregations^[6].

The observance was not limited to the Noney district. Demonstrating the expansive reach of the RBCC, the special prayer day was celebrated by Rongmei diaspora and church units across different states. For example, Mr. Steelson Thaimei, the Barak Zone Secretary of the RBCC, delivered a dedicated Gospel message for the 41st Women's Day of Prayer at the Namdailong Baptist Church in Cachar, Assam^[7]. This pan-India fellowship united the Rongmei Christian community in shared faith and purpose.

Vibrant Church Activities and Competitions

The Women’s Day of Prayer was characterized by vibrant fellowship, thanksgiving, and diverse activities that catered to all age groups^[8]. Congregations organized spiritually uplifting events including Gospel song performances, storytelling sessions, and theological debate competitions involving women, youth, and children^[9].

Several local churches added creative and cultural expressions to their services. At the Raenghzaeng Baptist Church, the afternoon activities featured an engaging choreography competition, demonstrating how local congregations are integrating youth participation and artistic worship into their traditional prayer gatherings^[10]. Ultimately, the day successfully reaffirmed the value, dignity, and irreplaceable contributions of women in the spiritual and social life of the Rongmei people^[11].

Manipur Government Approves Rs 10 Lakh Compensation for Families of 49 Missing Persons

The Manipur state government has announced a one-time humanitarian compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the next of kin of 49 individuals who remain missing following the outbreak of ethnic conflict in May 2023^[1]. The decision was formally approved during a state Cabinet meeting held on Thursday, with officials acknowledging the profound hardships faced by these families over the past year and a half.

Under standard legal procedures, a missing person is typically presumed dead only after seven years. Because the families lack official death certificates and postmortem reports, they have been entirely excluded from Central scheme benefits^[2]. However, recognizing that these families are enduring struggles comparable to the relatives of deceased victims—who also received Rs 10 lakh—the state government decided to extend the same financial assistance. The total financial implication of Rs 4.90 crore will be borne entirely by the Manipur state government.

While official records did not explicitly disclose the community profiles of the 49 missing individuals, local sources indicate that at least 33 belong to the Meitei community, with the remaining individuals belonging to the Naga and Kuki communities^[3]. Since the conflict began, more than 300 lives have been lost across the region.

Demands for Alternative Livelihoods

The financial assistance, while welcomed, has drawn calls for more sustainable long-term support. According to R.K. Bijayalaxmi Devi, president of the NGO Souls Offered Unitedly for a Lustrated Society (SOULS), almost all of the missing individuals—with the exception of four students—were the sole breadwinners for their households^[4].

Devi emphasized that Rs 10 lakh is insufficient to sustain these families permanently. The NGO has formally requested the government to provide government jobs to the next of kin, alongside alternative means of livelihood in the interim period^[5]. For months, these families have waited for closure and justice, previously unable to access standard relief packages due to the absence of official death documentation.

Enhanced Ex-Gratia for Security Forces and Additional Cabinet Decisions

In addition to humanitarian aid for civilian families, the Manipur Cabinet approved a substantial increase in ex-gratia payments for Army and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel killed or injured while operating in the state. Recognizing that central forces face the same operational risks as the state police, the government aligned their compensation rates accordingly:

  • Death: Rs 10 lakh (up from Rs 2 lakh)

  • Permanent Disability: Rs 2 lakh

  • Grievous Injury: Rs 1 lakh

  • Simple Injury: Rs 20,000 (up from Rs 10,000)

The Cabinet also approved the constitution of the Fifth Manipur State Finance Commission (spanning 2026-27 to 2030-31) and sanctioned a pension hike for retired journalists, raising their monthly pension from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000.

Over 200 Naga Households Displaced in Manipur: Zeliangrong Leaders Demand Urgent Relief and Highway Security

Recent escalating tensions and suspected arson in Manipur have led to the displacement of over 200 Naga households. Residents from dozens of homes across at least eight villages in the Noney, Tamenglong, and Kangpokpi districts have been forced to flee their residences^[1]. Vulnerable settlements, including Sempat Naga, Gaidunluang, and Chamripeu, have been largely abandoned as communities fear further attacks and violence.

According to a memorandum submitted to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on October 1, 2026, by the Former & Senior Leaders’ Forum of Zeliangrong Civil Organisations (FSLFZCOs), the situation is rapidly deteriorating^[2]. Local news outlets, including Northeast News and Imphal Times, report that the forum highlighted how the growing unrest between the Naga and Kuki communities, exacerbated by recent civilian deaths in the Kamjong district, has amplified insecurity throughout the region^[3].

Urgent Demands for IDP Status and Border Security

In their direct appeal, Zeliangrong leaders urged the state government to officially recognize the displaced families as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)^[4]. Granting IDP status is critical for these households to immediately access standard humanitarian relief benefits.

Furthermore, the FSLFZCOs identified several border villages, such as Konsaram and Chawangkining, as highly vulnerable flashpoints. The civil bodies called for the immediate deployment of state security personnel to protect these areas and prevent further displacement^[5].

Strengthening Security on National Highway 37

A primary concern raised in the memorandum is the safety of civilians traveling along National Highway 37 (the Imphal-Jiribam corridor), a vital economic and transit artery^[6]. The forum demanded robust security escorts for civilian vehicles operating from Monday to Saturday, proposing strategic staging points at Keithelmanbi and Tupul Bazar, or alternatively, a continuous 11-hour daily security presence along the route^[7].

To underline the gravity of the threat, the forum recalled a tragic 1994 ambush during historical Kuki-Naga conflicts, where an insurgent attack on a passenger bus killed 40 civilians on this highway^[8]. The leaders argue this historical precedent justifies strongly managed highway security protocols today.

Addressing Inter-District Boundary Disputes

To achieve long-term peace, the FSLFZCOs proposed a formal reorganization of inter-district boundaries^[9]. The forum stressed that resolving these deeply rooted land and jurisdictional disputes is essential to ending the continuing conflicts and securing lasting stability for all communities in Manipur^[10].
