From Bamboo Handicrafts to Inspector of Drugs: The Inspiring Journey of Bonrai Rongmei

In the quiet village of Machkhal Ragailuang, Assam, a story of profound resilience and triumph has unfolded. Born on October 12, 1990, to the late Bongkham Rongmei and Makuliu Rongmei, Bonrai Rongmei’s life is a testament to the power of unyielding perseverance. Overcoming significant socio-economic hurdles, he has carved a path from selling handmade crafts to becoming the first Inspector of Drugs from his community in Cachar district, Assam.[1]

Early Life and Struggles

Bonrai’s educational foundation was laid at the 1331 No. Machkhal Nagapunji LP School. He later graduated from higher secondary school in 2009 at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Pailapool, Cachar.[1] His path was far from easy. Hailing from a background deeply rooted in bamboo handicraft making, his childhood and adolescence were marked by severe financial hardships.

Throughout his youth and into his early twenties, Bonrai embarked on a grueling weekly 6-kilometer trek to the Binnakandi weekly bazaar. Carrying handcrafted bamboo articles on his head, he sought to support his family. With every step, he sowed the seeds of his future, returning home often with meager earnings but an unbroken spirit.[1]

Finding His Path in Pharmacy

Inspired by his cousin, Dr. Sachui Rongmei (a Neurosurgeon, MCh), and bolstered by the unconditional emotional support of his mother, Bonrai found his calling in the pharmaceutical sciences.[1] He pursued and successfully completed his B.Pharm degree from Assam University, dedicating himself entirely to his studies despite the ongoing challenges at home.

Before entering government service, Bonrai honed his expertise in the private pharmaceutical sector:

  • Packaging Officer: Cipla Ltd., Sikkim (August 13, 2015 – December 16, 2016)[1]

  • Production Officer: Natco Pharma Ltd. (January 4, 2017 – September 12, 2018)[1]

Beyond his professional dedication, Bonrai was also a passionate athlete, competing as a regional-level volleyball and kho kho player.[1]

Achieving His Dream: Assam Health Services

His relentless hard work culminated on September 18, 2018, when he joined the Assam Government as a pharmacist.[1] Continuing to push boundaries, he eventually achieved the prestigious position of Inspector of Drugs for the Cachar district under the Directorate of Health Services, Assam—a historic first for his community.[2]

As a dedicated government official, Bonrai has actively carried out his duties, sometimes facing significant on-the-job challenges. In September 2023, while discharging his official duties at the Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), an unfortunate altercation occurred involving hospital staff, which made regional headlines and prompted government and police intervention.[2][3] The incident underscored the immense pressures and responsibilities tied to regulatory enforcement in the medical sector.

Throughout his arduous journey, Bonrai was anchored by the unwavering support of his then-girlfriend and now wife, Mrs. Maku Rongmei, who stood by him as a constant source of strength.[1]

Today, Mr. Bonrai Rongmei’s journey from the winding lanes of Machkhal Ragailuang to the office of the Drug Inspector serves as a beacon of hope for anyone facing adversity. He stands as living proof that circumstances are temporary, and with unwavering resolve, dreams are attainable regardless of where one starts.
